Alright. The Microsoft Edge is now actually viable to use.
Sure, I know NVDA had a crack at it early, but it just wasn’t there.
FS or GSA and Microsoft worked on it, and with Jaws 2018, its looking useful.
It gives almost too much information on a web page, but that’s fine.
I had the habit of using different browsers for different things and was having a bit of a hard time at a task I wanted to complete.
I could do it with outie, but it wasn’t smooth.
I decided to try the Edge, and with it I could find all the things I was missing, and that made it easy.
So, now we’ve got another browser in the mix.
I’d not make it default just yet, they are still working on it, but as aa go to when other fail, it might just be the thing.
I keep them all at hand on my Windows computers.
I need to add. The latest version of Jaws 18 also has Edge support, but it is off by default.
You must be running Windows 10 1703 to make the edge work. Currently the version is 1709 the fall creator update.
You will get that automatically if you’ve not downloaded it yet.
To able Edge support.
. You can turn on Edge support through Settings Center by doing the following:
1. Press INSERT+F2, and select Settings Center.
2. Press CTRL+SHIFT+D to load the JAWS default settings.
3. In the Search edit box, type "edge browser" without the quotes.
4. Press DOWN ARROW to move to "Microsoft Edge Browser Support" in the filtered search results in the tree view.
5. Press SPACEBAR to toggle this option.
6. Press ENTER to save your change and close Settings Center, and then quit and restart Jaws.
Speaking of Windows. I read that Microsoft will stop giving us Windows 10 after December 31 2017. In 2018, we'll have to buy it, or get it on a new computer.
Maybe by that time they feel they'll have all the accessibilitie kinks worked out, so we'll be as even as we can be with these things anyway.
You can make JAWS give less information while you're in an edge window. It's something you have to configure related to the hints, but I thought I heard them mentioning it in one of the most recent FSCasts. So, I'd listen to that and see what they tell you, unless you want to flip around through the help files.
Yes, true.
My problem with that is I want the information right now until I learn more about the Browser.
Once I get use to it, then I might change the settings.
I know for sure from a visual stand point, we miss lots of information on web pages.
Sure, it might be junk, but it is nice to be able to decide your level of junk.
FS was fast this year. The release of Jaws 2018 was done Friday Oct. 25th. That's a bit early, but it is solid so far, so I guess they were ready.
Again, the Edg is a work in progress, but it will get better.
thanks forereel
Any good reason to use Edge over any of the other options out there?
Yes. If it works for a site that doesn't work on the other.
Laughing.
I'm serious. I have an account, and this particular account is difficult to pay using all the others.
I tried the Edge on it, and it made it so easy, I posted this topic.
You'll find it does well on somethings, not on others.
Microsoft claims you'll get better security, but the others are adding these features too, so maybe that isn't compelling.
I keep them all, and depending on what I need, I go to that one to get it done, or enjoy it, or whatever.
You also have to consider something else:
On November 14, if you're using JAWS and firefox, earlier versions than
JAWS 2018 will probably not work with firefox anymore, and JAWS 2018 will
work on it, but very sluggishly. this is due to some process or other that
they're implementing to speed up the browser. I firmly believe that Internet
explorer is antiquated and no longer even deserves a look. That pretty
much makes your only viable options Chrome, which works great with
JAWS, or Edge, which is a work in progress. Me personally, I've switched
completely to Chrome.
NVDA is supposedly going to work with this new release of firefox, but I
haven't gotten a concrete assurance one way or the other.
Oh JAWS 18. I'd actually not mind getting it, but can I just use Freedom Scientific's site to update it like a normal software update? Nooooooo, of course not. I have to use a vender to request one. Lick my scrote you antiquated monkeys.
Back on topic, I must be one of the few people who still uses Internet Explorer. I do find it lockes up JAWS on several websites. Other than that I haven't had too much trouble. Never been a huge fan of Crrome. Firefox seems to be the only browser JAWS will work with when it comes to Google Dox though, strangely enough.
I still use IE. It is my default, and I like it.
I understood that Jaws 2018, not 18, will be able to work, and work well with the newest Firefox, so we'll see how that goes.
I live in the US, so buy my upgrades directly.
What are advantages of chrome? I use IE also. Have jaws 18 and edge still seems a little iffy right now. Checked the box for edge in jaws settings and was hung up it seemed. Didn't see a bunch of information like was stated here; when I tried to move the PC cursor around it wouldn't read.
Again, it just depends on what you're doing.
It is my humble opinion that for us we don't really get an advantage over one or the other.
You simply use what works best for the things you do, and settings on your computer.
Your personal likes dislikes.
Somebodyd change my mine?
Laughing.
You are quite incorrect. Browsers like Chrome and Firefox are definitely
faster than IE. They also have other useful features, such as the ability to
"efficiently" resume downloads, without depending on a third-party
download manager. Not to say the invaluable ability to check your spelling,
which IE also lacked last I checked it. IE is a browser that's on its way out
just like AOL instant messenger, and good riddance to it. It's not even
worth the effort that it takes to use it.
I feel that I also need to point out that yes, supposedly, Firefox will work
with JAWS 2018, but you need to pay attention to the key words "very
sluggishly". It will probably be slower than the current version of Firefox
from what they're making it sound like. It will likely stay like that, until they
can come out with whatever fix they're going to need for it.
I haven't had any issues using google Chrome with google docs. So, you
might want to make sure you have the latest version of JAWS installed. I
believe that google Docs support was implemented around JAWS 18, but
someone can probably correct me if I'm wrong.
An that is my point exactly. It really depends on what you do, your likes and dislikes.
IE is fast enough for me. Sometimes, I don't find Chrome, or Fire Fox any faster, and they get glitches all the time.
Pages I know are actual won't load. I have to re ask. In the middle of a page, it simply crashes, and you understand.
I'm not likely to require the feature to resume a download. I won't start installing anything unless I've got the time.
I also want to watcdh what it downloads.
Even legit software has gotten things attached to it you don't want, or need.
So, you like the others, and that works.
Smile.
Having just downloaded Jaws 2018, I have not tried it yet with Firefox. Will have to see what happens.
No problem with Firefox and Jaws here. Firefox version 56.0.2 Not slow at all. I wonder why the warraning?
Its fickle.
I'm going to try it some more.
Okay, here is the strange thing. My firefox updated today to version 57. Man, that is when you notice the slow downs for sure. Had to download the extended release version to fix things. So, yes, Firefox version 57 Quantum is quite slow with Jaws. Pretty non-functional, really.
I have played around with Edge now. Kind of enjoy the added info that Jaws provides here. For instance, when searching through Google results, it says "Entering ads" or "Search Results". That is nice.
The latest version of Jaws has added some things to it. Read the notes if interested at FS's website.
Its getten betta.
Laughing.
In Edgge, settings to stop Eloquence changing language when the page is a different language do not work for me. If I go to a French website, Jaws will start speaking the French bits in French. It switches between British and American English on some websites. Very annoying. This doesn't happen when using NVDA.
